The Attach Dictionary Brief Content Of ZhouYi(excerpts)

天尊地卑,乾坤定矣。——Qian Triplat(Q.T.) with firmness as the body,and firmness is the same as the masculinity of heaven。Kun Six Interrupt(K.S.I.) with submissive as the body,and submissive is the same as pliancy of earth。The two of them determined the essence of Q.T. and K.S.I.。

卑高以陈,贵贱位矣。——The earth lay below,giving the impression of looking down upon it;while the sky stretched above,creating the illusion of gazing up at it。Not only heaven and earth,but all things are of a similar view。

动静有常,刚柔断矣。——The thing that can move and always remain constant is strong,and the thing that can always remain static is soft。What can move but cannot be kept cannot be strong,and what can be still but cannot be kept cannot be supple。

方以类聚,物以群分,吉凶生矣。——The same character,or behavior,or idea,or view,or the same way of things,can be divided into the same kind。If you’re in the same group with the same thing,it’s auspicious,but if you’re not,there’s trouble。

在天成象,在地成形,变化见矣。——The sun,moon and stars are like hanging in the sky,and the mountains,rivers,plants and trees are formed on the earth,and the breath between them flows through each other,forming clouds and rain,as if they are changing。

是故刚柔相摩,八卦相荡。——When Anode-air energy reaches its peak,it becomes Cathode-gas,and conversely,when Cathode-gas energy reaches its peak,it also becomes Anode-air.。Anode-air energy represents strength,and Cathode-gas energy represents suppleness,so strength and suppleness induce each other and change times。The same is true of the eight trigrams,although the various hexagrams are transformed into each other due to Cathode-gas and Anode-air,they all come from the most basic eight hexagrams。

鼓之以雷霆,润之以风雨。日月运行,一寒一暑。乾道成男,坤道成女。乾知大始,坤作成物。乾以易知,坤以简能。——The Eight Gua diagrams( 八卦) play their respective roles,Z.F.J. as thunder and L.M.H. as electricity,it’s like beating a drum in the sky。X.B.I. as wind and K.M.F. as rain,both nourish all things。Or L.M.H. as sun and K.M.F. as moon,one season is characterized by high temperatures,while the other is marked by cold weather。Q.T. acquires Cathode-gas and becomes male,the K.S.I. acquires Anode-air and becomes female。All things begin in the Anode-air energy of Q.T. ,and all things belong to the big aspect,so it is said that Q.T. knows the big beginning。In the beginning,everything had no shape and could not be operated,so it was only said that Q.T. was known。K.S.I. can make things form,and things that have been formed can be operated,so K.S.I. can operate things。Both Q.T. and K.S.I. can naturally produce and form all things,so the process of knowing are easy and simple to operate。If the process of generation or formation of an object is difficult,then it is not easy to understand the object,and it will be very tiring from beginning to end。

易则易知,简则易从。易知则有亲,易从则有功。——Since Q.T. easy to be recognized,the recognition of Q.T. makes it easier to recognize Zhouyi as well.。Because K.S.I. is simple,it’s easy to imitate。Once it is easy to understand each other,then they will be easily accessible。What is easy to imitate will be easy to succeed。

有亲则可久,有功则可大。——Since things are harmonious and approachable,they can live together for a long time。Career success,many a mickle makes a muckle,and would be easy to expand。

可久则贤人之德,可大则贤人之业。——It is one of the virtues of a gentleman to keep things for a long time,because it is able to nourish all things.。If you make your career bigger,you can achieve a gentleman’s career。

易简则天下之理得矣。——There is no law,or reason,or physics,or jurisprudence in the world that is not because of the simplicity,easy understanding,easy operation,easy accessibility,easy success,easy longevity and easy expansion of ZhouYi and each of them gets a suitable position。

天下之理得,而成位乎其中矣。——Once you understand the laws of the world,you can paint a picture of the world and say,”The world is in the picture。” In other words,we have acquired the Sixty-four Gua Designs。

圣人设卦观象,系辞焉而明吉凶,刚柔相推而生变化。——The sage laid out the 64 Gua Designs,predicting good fortune and evil,seeing if there is regret or happiness in the Attach Dictionary(系辞),and various changes of action or waiting,forward or backward,day or night ,and so on。

是故吉凶者,失得之象也。悔吝者,忧虞之象也。变化者,进退之象也。刚柔者,昼夜之象也。——The reason why things are good and bad is because there is a difference between loss and gain,or the different outcomes of things happening,developing,ending。People regret or despise things,which is expressed as sadness or sorrow。Everything has a Gua Designs,and the change of things is manifested in the upward or backward progress of the Cathode-line(阴爻) or Anode-line(阳爻) in the Gua Designs,finally the nature of senary-place (爻位) have changed ,eventually brings something changed 。During the day the sun shines on all things,and all things grow and become strong;and at night the moon moistens all things and makes all things soft。

六爻之动,三极之道也。——The dynamic of the Senary-Layer-Divination Gua ( 六爻卦) are the ultimate change of the three materials —— heaven,earth,and man。The three materials are also known as the three talents,or moral character,or laws ,and so on。

是故君子所居而安者,易之序也。——The “序” here represents order,or sequence,and arrange in order,which can represent both Gua Designs and senary-place 。The meaning of the whole sentence here is that the gentleman has insight into the meaning of the Gua Designs and senary-place,understands his position and situation, judges the good and the bad, or gains and losses, or advances and retreats,and is stable and not frightened,not surprised。

所乐而玩者,爻之辞也。是故君子居则观其象而玩其辞,动则观其变而玩其占。是以自天佑之,吉无不利。——The Sixty-four Gua Designs ,and Gua dictionary,and senary-diction contain words,but the changes in the Cathode-line or Anode-line and the multitude of images captured allow for a deeper understanding of gains,losses,and concerns。Therefore,the gentleman enjoys contemplating the meaning of these words during leisure time,observing changes in Gua Designs and lines when planning actions,studying predicted outcomes,following the guidance of Zhouyi to avoid evil influences from above,and ensuring good fortune without disadvantages。

彖者,言乎象者也。——The words of Tuan(彖) overview summarizes the meaning of a Gua Designs。

爻者,言乎变者也。——The texts of each Cathode-line or Anode-line describes its own variation。

吉凶者,言乎其失得也。悔吝者,言乎其小疵也。无咎者,善补过也。是故列贵贱者存乎位,——The texts of Gua dictionary and senary-diction illustrated the relationship between gains and losses and good fortune and evil。People’s regret or contempt for something means that there are small flaws in it。A person who is not at fault is good at correcting his mistakes,further,the so-called scourge is caused by the individual’s own reasons,and there is no room for remorse。The lines of senary-place represent the upper and lower structure of the hierarchy。

齐小大者存乎卦,——The Sixty-four Gua Designs are divided into large or small,careful discernment of the Gua Design will give you an idea of the size of things。Remember,Sixty-four Gua Designs can represent things we see on a daily basis。For example, Q.I.H. represents the sky,Mountain Gua represents the mountain,the sky is bigger than the mountain,and the mountain is smaller than the sky。

辩吉凶者存乎辞,——The texts of senary-diction elaborate on the changes of the Cathode-line or Anode-line,so it became the basis for judging the good and the bad。

忧悔吝者存乎介,——People’s worries and anxieties originate from small flaws。The “介” here represents small flaws。

震无咎者存乎悔。——He who acts without mistake does so because he has repentance。

是故卦有小大,辞有险易。——In the ZhouYi,the saints used the Gua Design to represent the objects we see every day,which can distinguish between large and small,and also called the bright upward road the big road,and the dark downward road as the small road。In the Attach Dictionary,the road of peace and smoothness is called easy,and the road of danger and twists is called difficult。

辞也者,各指其所之。《易》与天地准,——The words of Attach Dictionary correspond to the Cathode-line or Anode-line of Gua Design one-to-one。If the lines are kind,then their implications will also be kind;conversely,if the lines are sinister,then their implications will also be harsh。The sage created ZhouYi to align with all things in heaven and earth。

故能弥纶天地之道。仰以观于天文,俯以察于地理,是故知幽明之故。原始反终,故知死生之说。——Therefore,the sage can summarize,govern,integrate,penetrate,connect,and lead the laws with all things between heaven and earth。The sun,moon and stars are like hanging in the sky,they are like the patterns of the sky,You can see it when you look up。Mountains,rivers,plants and trees are displayed in an orderly manner on the land respective。Man is between heaven and earth,so man looks up to heaven and looks down on the earth。The saints gaze heavenward,discerning the nuances of formless entities;then turn their eyes to the earth,where the shapes reveal all。The saint traces the origin of things,the source is the place of birth,and the saint deduces the end of things,and the end is the end of death。From the beginning to the end,it is all contained in it,and for this reason,it is said that the saint knows the law of death or life。

精气为物,游魂为变,——When Cathode-gas and Anode-air converge,they become all things;and when they are separated,they lose their human and material properties。

是故知鬼神之情状。——The sage is well aware of the laws of change in ZhouYi,whether it is the birth of things due to the accumulation of Cathode-gas and Anode-air,or the death of things due to the separation of Cathode-gas and Anode-air,he knows it well,so he can know the situation of the heteromorphism or special-shaped and Immortals。

与天地相似,故不违。——The actions of saints are similar to those of heaven and earth,thus it is in harmony with them.。

知周乎万物,而道济天下,故不过。——There is nothing that a saint does not know,so a saint understands all things,is provided for by all things,and acts in harmony,so there is no fault。

旁行而不流,——The sage grasps the knowledge or law of a certain thing,and then deduces the knowledge or law of the same thing,without frivolous fault。If people do not adapt to the changes of the times and behave without common sense,they are frivolous。

乐天知命,故不忧。——Saints who conform to the world and implement enlightenment have the ability to bring happiness to the world,and understanding the beginning and end of things is tantamount to understanding one’s own fate,and go with the flow,so there is no sorrow。

安土敦乎仁,故能爱。——The character of all things is to like the quietness of the thick earth,as well as generosity,and benevolence。Therefore,the saints are able to nourish all things with love。“安土”——Azuchi Castle (あづちじょう) is a remnant of the residence of Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582) in Japan。It is designated as a National Special Historic Site and integrates some of Japan’s most outstanding art at the time。The name of Azuchi Castle comes from ZhouYi,as does Gifu Castle (ぎふじょう)。

范围天地之化而不过。——The actions of the saints can serve as a model for the surrounding heaven and earth,according to the laws of heaven and earth without fault。

曲成万物而不遗。——The saint adapts to all things and does not give up because things are small。

通乎昼夜之道而知。——The saint knows the truth of day and night,both in the light and in the dark,so he knows everything。

故神无方,而易无体。——So God doesn’t just exist in one direction,it’s invisible,immeasurable,and always changing;And ZhouYi changes with things,and there is no fixed shape。

一阴一阳之谓道,——Tao (“道” )is the meaning of Taoists。Tao Te Ching,translated by Lin Yutang (林语堂,1895-1976),says “I do not know its name,and address it as Tao。” However,Lu Xun (鲁迅,1881-1936),one of the founders of modern Chinese literature,in the QieJieting Essays II,and Essay Collection,Lu Xun’s Anthology (鲁迅文集·杂文集·且介亭杂文二集),commented that Lin Yutang had “No confidence at all”, and “an empty stomach and a high heart”,and “how can he really understand (literary heritage,including Zhou Yi)” ,and questioned his ability to truly comprehend the literary heritage,including Zhouyi。I agree with Lu Xun’s evaluation of Lin Yutang,so this website uses “Dao” instead of “Tao” to represent Taoism。In the published terminology of Chinese thought and culture,this sentence is translated as:The Alternation of Yin and Yang Constitutes the Way。But this is a very superficial translation,although I don’t understand why they would translate it that way。Why don’t they translate according to Zhouyi Justice?

“Dao” is a kind of name for nothing,that is,there is no name,there is no place that cannot be reached,there is no reason why everything cannot grow because of it,and there is no reason why it cannot be smoothed,and when the Dao is in the Anode-air,it is nothingness,that is,there is no such Anode-air。When the Dao is in the Cathode-gas,it is also nothing,and there is no such Cathode-gas。Although there is no such Anode-air,Anode-air must be generated by the Dao;Although there is no such Cathode-gas,Cathode-gas is also generated by the Dao。Although the Dao is not for Cathode-gas and Anode-air,the Dao does not leave Cathode-gas and Anode-air。Although Cathode-gas and Anode-air are generated by the Dao, Cathode-gas and Anode-air are not the Dao。When Cathode-gas and Anode-air are used,they take nothing as their heart,and generate all things without intention。The manifestations or accomplishments of Dao have no tangible form when in operation and thus remain intangible while subject to change according to circumstance。Naturally,there is Cathode-gas and Anode-air,and it is naturally created without intention,which is called Dao。In numerical terms,the Dao is ”one“。Because the Dao is inseparable,it is sole or single。Yes,Dao is “一”。

继之者善也,成之者性也。仁者见之谓之仁,知者见之谓之知,——The Dao is to give birth to all things,to be open and unobstructed。And goodness is to cultivate all things according to the truth。Therefore,the act of being able to inherit the merits of the Dao is a good deed。Human nature is to achieve this good deed,and those who have a kind character can achieve it according to this way,which can be called benevolence。A man of knowledge who achieves according to this way may be called wise。

百姓日用而不知,故君子之道鲜矣。——Although the common people are applying the Dao every day,they do not know where the Dao comes from,and only the gentleman can understand the truth of the Dao,but such people are very rare。The Dao generates Cathode-gas and Anode-air,and Cathode-gas and Anode-air transform each other,forming the alternation of day and night,the rotation of seasons,the ups and downs of personnel,luck or disaster,and so on。Every day,ordinary people go through these things without knowing where it comes from and where it’s going。
